At some point after 6:00 PM last night, our street was loaded up with NO PARKING signs for today, starting at 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM so that it could be repaved. At 8:30, the landlady called to tell us that the police were towing vehicles off the street.
I threw on some clothes, ran out and took my truck just as the police were towing away the vehicle parked in front of me. Those thieving bastards are in no way going to get money from me for towing a vehicle!
But it gets better: Parking in Brooklyn is already at a premium, and taking out a portion of the street that holds about 50 cars makes parking even tougher. But the No Parking is for the WHOLE street, 9 long blocks worth of vehicles all now having to find someplace to park their cars in an area that is already devoid of parking.
I drove around for about 20 minutes looking for someplace to park before I got extremely lucky. As I was turning the corner on the next block over, I saw someone pull out of a space and I immediately took it. Only took me 20 minutes, which is pretty good considering if I have to try to find a space in the morning it usually takes an hour or so.
There has been talk of making the streets of Brooklyn parking only for residents of that street, and each vehicle would need a sticker in order to park on the street. Most of the people around us think this is a great idea, as many of the cars parked on our street are from people who live further out in Brooklyn and park here because it is so close to a Subway station. With resident parking stickers, these people would no longer be allowed to park on our street, and would be towed away.
My only concern with resident parking stickers is that what happens if you have someone visiting from out of town for a few days? Where are they supposed to park? Would every house on the street get a special visitor pass that will have to go into the vehicle of the people visiting? Knowing NYC, they would still just tow it away to grab all the money they can from people who come to New York, whether to visit or to live.
I am not going to miss NYC in the least, and can’t wait until I am out of here! (Only about a week to go, then I m GONE!!)
