Science Fiction has given us a plethora of ideas over the years, from the submarine depicted by Jules Verne, to the tricorder used in Star Trek. And we have seen many of these devices become reality. Lasers are now being used in and as weapons and can be bought at any convenience store for two bucks.

Cell phones were once a part of sci-fi and are now free with a contract with hundreds of different companies.

Even going to the moon was once considered a flight of fancy in the sci-fi realm, yet we regularly send people into space and have been to the moon.

But there is one idea from sci-fi that has yet to be worked out, one idea that once safely created means the destruction of the world as we know it. That idea is…

TELEPORTATION!

Teleportation and teleporters have been mainstream in science fiction stories and movies since before Star Trek’s famous “Beam me up, Scotty.” And scientists have been working on the idea since with no really useful outcome.

But as attractive as teleportation is, as much as I would love to be able to walk into a doorway or onto a platform and be transported anywhere I might want to go in the blink of an eye, it will never happen.

Not that the possibility isn’t there, not that modern or future physics can’t find the solution, not that there wouldn’t be a billion good uses for teleportation.

It will never happen because it would destroy the economy of every single country on this planet. As soon as a working teleportation device becomes available, every single country will suddenly find itself economically and physically destroyed.

How? Think about it.

With the ability to transport items from one location to another without the lengthy shipping delay, we’ll see shipping companies like UPS, DHL and FEDEX go out of business. Why ship something with them and wait 24 hours or more for delivery when it can be sent via teleporter in a flash?

Same with airlines. Goodbye Delta, American Airlines, Southwest and the rest of the industry. Why should I fold myself into their cramped seats for hours on end to travel to another country when there is a way to go their directly in a blink of an eye?

Who would need a car? Say goodbye to GM, Ford, Toyota and the rest of the group. And since we are saying goodbye to them, we can also say goodbye to Exxon-Mobil, Shell, BP and all of the oil companies. Who would need oil other than electric companies?

So, there are four industries gone or seriously wrecked once a working teleportation system is created.

But that’s only four. How does that destroy the economy? Keep reading.

All four of those companies either directly or indirectly use steel. Since they are no longer around, there is less need for steel, so it goes bankrupt.

Since cars are a thing of the past, there is no need for construction crews to build roads. Since there are no airlines, Boeing and Airbus are out the door. And with all of the electronic equipment in planes nowadays, this will affect the likes of Intel and AMD.

Gas stations, car dealers, and repair shops all disappear because there are no more cars that need to be sold, filled with gas or repaired. Shipbuilders, train builders, 18-wheel truck builders all vanish from the face of the earth. Oil refineries, pipeline repair companies, oil fields are gone.

Civil engineering (the design of bridges, tunnels, and roadways) becomes an extinct art form. Some of the worlds most beautiful bridges are now of no use and taking up space that could be used for other things.

Motorcycles, bicycles, trikes and any other form of wheeled transportation is now an anachronism, part of a quaint history that everyone wants to forget.

Fast food restaurants no longer need drive-thru windows. They don’t even need doors! With teleporters, there is no need for doors or elevators or stairs or escalators. This means there is no need for the lumberjacks cutting the wood needed to make these items or the plastics company that makes the parts, or the aluminum company either.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Hundreds of millions to possibly billions of people end up jobless as companies that have been around for decades shrink their staff to accommodate the changes in their business or just shut their doors completely.

And as more and more people become jobless and less and less jobs become available for those out of work, the more money the governments of the world have to shell out for unemployment benefits. But there is only so much money in the world, and governments can no longer borrow funds from other countries to pay for social welfare because those other countries need money too.

Social Security checks, unemployment checks, WIC checks all bounce because there is just no money left.

People have to carry weapons when they go grocery “shopping” to protect the food they have just stolen from the store from being stolen by someone else so that their children and elderly parents and grandparents don’t starve to death.

Governments suddenly face anarchy as the people revolt against their leaders. Suicide, murder, assault all skyrocket out of control as 6 billion face certain death.

All because we wanted to send a sandwich from New York City to Tokyo in 30 seconds.
