photo_7951_20090826For those of you who might not know it, I am a full-time college student. This semester I happen to be taking my very first foreign language class: French!

Today in class, we learned that in France, the government of France controls education. Therefore, someone in grade 8 in Paris is getting pretty much the same education as someone going to school in the same grade in the town of Nice. I say “pretty much” because the curriculum is the same, but every teacher is different so there could be some minor differences.

We also learned that children can start school, free of charge to the parents, at age 2, and that most children (somewhere around 98%) are in school at age 3. The classes in France are very structured, and very comprehensive, and that just before a child is promoted to the High School level, they are tested in their aptitude and it is decided what their best course of schooling should be for high school, whether that be to go into some sort of trade (such as carpentry or plumbing) or prepare to go on to university. They are also never taught how to print letters. It is cursive handwriting from day one. Continue reading »

Toshiba Laptop

My first two weeks of school have proven to be a bit on the frustrating side. There are not enough public computers on campus for everyone to use, and I realized that I would need to have a computer of my own, but had to wait until the financial money came in to get one. Financial aid would not get to me until sometime in October, so I figured I would have to wait until then to get myself a laptop for school.

That is, until this afternoon.

I had to get some folders for class, so I went to OfficeMax. While I was there, I decided to take a look at the computers and discovered that they had their assortment of computers on sale. And the laptop you see in the photo is now being used to write this post!

It’s a Toshiba Satellite L655D. It has an AMD processor, 250 Gigabyte hard drive, 3 Gigabytes of RAM, a 15+” widescreen, and a number pad! It came with Windows 7 Home Premium, an ATI Radeon video card, a webcam, and whole bunch of “bloatware” software, which I am slowly getting rid of.

But it was the price that sold me! $379.99! On sale from $499.99.

It’s not the best computer in the world, I know, but now I will be able to sit in the library at school and do what I need on the computer without having to stand around waiting for someone to get off one of the public computers.

Click on the picture to get your own new Toshiba from OfficeMax! From what I can tell, it will be on sale until 4 September 2010 (though the guy I spoke with at OfficeMax did say that the sale was to end tonight in the store).

Classes begin again in just 13 days, and to be honest, I am a little apprehensive about it. This semester I will be taking some rather advanced classes in Math and Economics, and I honestly didn’t quite understand the lower classes I have already taken.

I am also taking my first ever foreign language class. I speak English only, and after 40 years of speaking that, I am about to learn how to speak French. This out to be interesting – and completely new. Fortunately for me, I have a live-in tutor in the form of my partner, who used to be a French Teacher. I should ace the class. If I don’t, I have a serious problem!

My biggest issue this semester is that I don’t have any classes that set out to be fun classes, like I did last semester. Fun classes are those that you take just because they have some sort of appeal to you, like Creative Writing and Business Law were last semester. This semester, all of my classes are requires classes. So I end up with Pre-calculus, US History (which is to be AFTER 1865, since at no time during my public education years did a history class ever get to the Civil War), Microeconomics, Astronomy (which seemed to be the best science class) and so forth.

On Monday, the 16th, I will be able to know more about whether or not I am going to like the classes, because I can purchase my books on that day. This will give me a week to look through them, read some of them, and just prepare myself for the semester to come.

What will be good is getting back into the school rhythm. It will be good to see which of my school friends have returned, and to meet new friends and professors. And to see some of my old professors again. There are a couple that even though I won’t be in there classes again I just love talking to!

Anyway, 13 days and counting, and I can start up with the homework complaints again! I can’t wait!

Another story added!

So, I recently turned in my piece of short fiction, got back the comments from the professor and fellow students, and have posted it to my writing website. Feel free to read it by going to the site here or directly to the story here.

It’s rather long, so be prepared to be reading for a while. Also, I rated it PG-13 on the website because it deals with some rather mature subject matter. It does NOT have any F-bombs in it, otherwise I would have put it under Rated R.

Hope you enjoy it!

My first assignment for my Creative Writing class is due as a draft on Monday. It is supposed to be 3 pages long, mine is 11. I guess I can’t really keep things short! LOL

I have posted the draft to my Writing website (link is to the side of this page) as two separate parts, but listed under the page labeled Non-Fiction.

You can check out the website here or go directly to Part 1 or Part 2.

Hope you enjoy them!
