Yet another update

I finally had the stitches taken out of my eyelid, but I am still having complications with my eye. There is a slight double vision issue going on, that I can only describe as taking a printed piece of paper, and laying the same printed material on clear plastic over the top, then slightly shift the plastic so that you can still read the printed material, but it’s slightly skewed.

The wound itself also has some scar tissue build-up so that I feel as if there is always something pressing against my eyeball, which I guess technically is very true.

I have yet to visit with the ophthalmologist to assess if there is going to be any permanent damage. Several calls to the local hospital have resulted in absolutely nothing as far as setting up the appointment goes. I am pretty sure that I will be seeing him/her pretty soon, as I have managed to get an appointment with a very well-known lawyer here in town to discuss whether or not I have a case against the company I got my glasses from. If I have a case, then I am definitely going to need to know if there is going to be permanent damage.

So that is where I stand now. A bit in the void as far as a lot of things are concerned.

A quick update

BlackEye

It’s been almost a week since I posted anything on this site, and I figured that it was time to let everyone know what’s been going on.

My eye is slowly healing, the bruising is much less now than it was a few days ago. The swelling is also down a bit, but overall I am suffering from a lot of pain still (I think from the stitches) so I spend all day in throbbing pain, which is dulled by taking Aleve, and at night take one of the pills I was prescribed. I don’t take them during the day because they totally fuck me up!

Within half an hour after taking the hydrocodone, I am basically comatose. I am not asleep, as I can hear everything going on around me, but I can’t move. I just lay there for about an hour, feeling myself falling further and further into a hellish sleep/coma. When I do finally come out of this coma, I am not refreshed. Instead, I am totally exhausted, feeling like I have been up for days.

I have to return to the hospital tomorrow to have the stitches removed. I am not looking forward to this at all. The last time I had stitches removed was from my hand, and while they didn’t hurt, I am leery about what my eye is going to do. The skin is very tender, so I may feel some pain as the stitches are taken out. That’s not going to be fun.

But the good news is that I can still see out of my eye, but it’s much blurrier than it used to be. I have a feeling there is some permanent damage. The ophthalmologist will be able to tell me more about that once I see him.

Anyway, that is where things sit at the moment.

Escape from New York!

P6070137 What would ultimately become a 3 day adventure in traveling, loading, unloading, traffic and a trip to the emergency room began at 8:00 Saturday morning.

We arrived at the Penske truck rental area in Brooklyn just after 8 on Saturday morning, almost an hour earlier than our scheduled pick-up time because the normally slow car service we called ended up at our apartment within 5 minutes. The first thing I noticed was that there were 4 trucks on the lot: three 12-foot models and one 26-foot model. We had reserved a 16-foot model.

In the rental office, there was a woman taking one of the 12-foot models, then there was me, and then about 5 other people trying to rent or deliver vehicles. None the of the vehicles that came in that morning were 16-foot trucks, and all of these people who were crowded into the tiny office were being served by a single, very overworked young man. You could just see it in his face that it was going to be a long day for him!

When it came time to deal with our rental reservation, he looked at the folder and sighed. We went through the process of signing all of the paperwork and paying for the truck, and then he leads us outside to a Toyota Sienna minivan. He has to drive us to our truck, 6 blocks away, leaving all of those other people alone in the rental office.

This is the only post I will be doing today, and I will not be posting tomorrow or possibly Sunday.

We are taking a small break as we wait for the dishwasher to finish running so that we can finish packing up the kitchen, then all that is left are the clothes (which we are working on here and there as we go along).

We discovered a few interesting moving tips as we packed up this apartment: Continue reading »

Apple recently introduced a new Mac Mini. It looks absolutely stunning, but the more I looked into it, the more I realized that the Mac Mini is a complete waste of money.

Lets take a look at the specs, shall we?

The cheapest Mini is $699. For that price you get an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 320 GB hard drive, and 2 GB of RAM. You also get the stuning look and form factor of the Mini.

But what does Dell offer?

For $714.99, you can configure an Inspiron 560 with an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, 1 TB hard drive, and 8 GB of RAM. However, you will have to deal with a typical PC desktop design. Nothing stunning.

So let’s go back to the Apple for a moment. It’s $15.99 cheaper than the Dell in it’s standard configuration, but how much is it if we decide to spec it out like the Dell? Let’s take a look:

The only processor option for the Mac Mini is to go from the 2.4 GHz chip to a 2.66 GHz that is again just a Core 2 Duo, not Core 2 Quad. Selecting that option will cost you an additional $150, bringing the price to $849. And we’re not done yet! We want to spec it out as close as possible to the $715 Dell.

This means we need to up the hard drive capacity from the base 320 Gb. Again, Apple only allows 1 option: a 500 Gb hard drive. This adds a further $100 to your price, and leaves you with half as much storage as the Dell.

So now we need to increase the RAM. The Mini comes standard with 2 Gb of RAM. We spec’d out the Dell for 8 Gb. Does Apple offer that much RAM in a Mini? Yes, but at the staggering price of $500!

This puts our Mac Mini, the “cheap” Mac, at a final price of $1449, before we have even looked at monitors! That is more than twice the cost of a Dell, with a lesser processor and half the storage!

Yes, Apple makes some gorgeous hardware, and I can honestly say they are the best looking machines currently out there.

But good god! The prices are just rediculously stupid! Twice as much for half the computer? (And I am only talking about hardware here, not software. I could care less if the Mini came with OSX or Windows or Linux.)

No wonder Apple now has a higher market cap than Microsoft: they’re bleeding their fanboys and fangirls dry of every last cent!
